Amateur UAVs are non-military and non-commercial. They typically fly under \u201crecreational\u201d exceptions to FAA regulations on UAVs, so long as the pilots\/programmers keep them within tight limits on altitude and distance. Usually the UAV is controlled manually by Radio Control (RC) at take-off and landing, and switched into GPS-guided autonomous mode only at a safe altitude. A glossary is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/diydrones.com\/profiles\/blog\/show?id=705844%3ABlogPost%3A42428\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3><b>What do I need to make one?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&#8212;1) An RC plane, muticopter (quadcopter\/hexacopter\/tricopter, etc) or helicopter (see good starter plane options\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/diydrones.com\/profiles\/blogs\/roundupreview-of-all-the\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>). You can buy them ready to fly, including autopilot,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rtf.3drobotics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n&#8212;2) An autopilot, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/store.3drobotics.com\/products\/apm-2-6-kit-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APM 2.6<\/a>\u00a0(see below)<br \/>\n&#8212;3) Optional: a useful \u201cpayload\u201d, such as a digital camera or video transmission equipment<\/p>\n<h3><b>What does DIY Drones have to offer?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The DIY Drones community has created the world&#8217;s first &#8220;universal autopilot&#8221;, ArduPilot Mega (APM).
