Notepad++<\/a>\u00a0is an open-source text editor for Windows. I have to work on different technologies, It\u2019s not possible to install all editors (like Dreamweaver, Visual studio 2010, \u2026etc) on my old machine. So I use Notepad++ as my default text-editor. It\u2019s simple and fast. Here are some tips for web developer and designer to use it effectively.<\/p>\n

1. Box Selection:<\/h3>\n

Similar to VS 2010, Box Selection (aka column selection, block selection, or rectangular selection) exists in Notepad++. You need to hold down the\u00a0Alt key<\/strong>\u00a0while doing a selection; you can select a block horizontally.<\/p>\n

2. Extended Search Mode:<\/h3>\n

Generally, It is needed to convert new line\/tab character. Suppose you have to remove new line character:
\nPress\u00a0Ctrl+H<\/strong>\u00a0, Select the \u2018Extended Search Mode<\/strong>\u2019. Use\u00a0\\n<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0find what<\/strong>\u00a0and nothing in\u00a0replace with<\/strong>\u00a0textbox. Click\u00a0Replace All<\/strong>\u00a0to remove new line character.<\/p>\n

3. Vertical Tab View:<\/h3>\n

Suppose you have to see two files and compare manually. You can open tab in vertical tab view. For this, Right click on tab > \u201cMove to Other View<\/strong>\u201d. Use F8 to toggle the views.<\/p>\n

4. Minify JS:<\/h3>\n

You can remove unnecessary space in your js file and can minify before deploying.<\/p>\n

Edit > Blank Operations > Trim Header and Trailing Space<\/strong>
\nEdit > Blank Operations > Remove Unnecessary Blank and EOL<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. Delete Line Numbers or First word:<\/h3>\n

Generally when we copy code from website and paste it we get line numbers or special char, we need to remove this. You can do this in Notepad++ easily.
\nTextFX > TextFX Tools > Delete Line Numbers or First word<\/strong><\/p>\n

6. Add Line Numbers:<\/h3>\n

You can add line numbers by\u00a0Edit > Column Editor > Number to Insert > Set Initial Number and Increase By >OK<\/strong>
\nYou can add any text also.<\/p>\n

7. AutoClose HTML\/XML tags:<\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re working with HTML or XML files, it closes every HTML tag as you type.
\nTextFX > TextFX Settings>Autoclose XML\/HTML tags<\/strong><\/p>\n

8. HTML Encode:<\/h3>\n

As a blogger, I have to post html source code. I need html encode before posting. It\u2019s very easy in Notepad++
\nTextFX > TextFX Convert > Encode HTML<\/strong><\/p>\n

9. Generate Dynamic Controls Quickly:<\/h3>\n

Suppose you have to create html controls dynamically.For this, First create static Html layout. Select Proper Language and
\nTextFX > TextFX Convert > Convert Text to Code Command<\/strong>
\nIt will take care of Quotes and line breaks.<\/p>\n

10. Setup HTML Tidy:<\/h3>\n

Suppose you have html body content only and you have to create proper html file then it is very handy to use html tidy.<\/p>\n

TextFX > TextFX HTML Tidy > Tidy(Most Recent HTMLTIDY.CFG)<\/strong><\/p>\n

11. Launch in Browser:<\/h3>\n

You can test html file in browser by clicking RUN and select Launch in Browser.<\/p>\n

12. Align Lines:<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s my favorite feature. You can line up multiple lines by ,(comma), = (equal sign) or clipboard character. It is very useful and helpful in Box selection.

13. Others:<\/h3>\n

Remove Blank Lines:
\nTextFX > TextFX Edit > Delete Blank Lines
\nTextFX > TextFX Edit > Delete Surplus Blank Lines<\/p>\n

Change Case:
\nTextFX > TextFX Characters > select the case in which you want to convert.<\/p>\n

The major inbuilt options can be performed using extended search mode. If you have other tips, leave a comment.<\/p>\n
