{"id":101,"date":"2013-03-17T19:42:41","date_gmt":"2013-03-18T00:42:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/homepages.uc.edu\/~yaozo\/wordpress\/?p=101"},"modified":"2013-03-17T19:42:41","modified_gmt":"2013-03-18T00:42:41","slug":"opening-kmz-kml-files-in-arcmap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zhuoyao.net\/index.php\/2013\/03\/17\/opening-kmz-kml-files-in-arcmap\/","title":{"rendered":"Opening KMZ \/ KML Files in ArcMap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently someone sent me a KMZ file that I needed to manipulate in ArcMap. \u00a0There is not a straight-forward way to do this (in ArcMap ArcView \/ ArcGIS for Desktop Basic), by the normal add data method or a toolbox item. \u00a0So I needed to figure out how to use this data, quickly, and preferably without spending any money.<\/p>\n<p>KMZ Files are compressed KML Files.\u00a0 KML files can contain raster (pictures) or vector information.\u00a0 Shapes, including points, lines, and polygons, as well as text can be contained in these files.\u00a0 There are several commercial applications that will convert KML files to shapefiles, or KMZ to File Geodatabases, etc.\u00a0 But you don\u2019t have to convert the file to a \u201cnormal\u201d Esri file format be able to open it in ArcMap.\u00a0 KML files are often associated with Google Earth (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/earth\/index.html\">http:\/\/www.google.com\/earth\/index.html<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I have downloaded a KML file from the European Commission Joint Research Center containing soil information:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eusoils.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/ESDB_Archive\/ESDBv3\/legend\/LegendData.cfm\">http:\/\/eusoils.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/ESDB_Archive\/ESDBv3\/legend\/LegendData.cfm<\/a>\u00a0(I just needed an example file).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/02-In-Google-Earth.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"02 - In Google Earth\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/02-In-Google-Earth.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before you can proceed any farther you will need ArcGIS Explorer (free download).\u00a0 You can download ArcGIS Explorer here:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/arcgis\/explorer\/index.html\">http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/arcgis\/explorer\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/arcgis_explorer_15001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"arcgis_explorer_1500\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/arcgis_explorer_15001.jpg\" width=\"470\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Got it installed?\u00a0 Good, let\u2019s continue.<\/p>\n<p>Open ArcGIS Explorer (this will change your windows display settings on Windows 7, deactivating the Aero interface).\u00a0 Click the \u201cAdd Content\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/03-Add-Content.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"03 - Add Content\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/03-Add-Content.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Go down to \u201cKML Files\u201d and Choose \u201cKML Files\u2026\u201d on the flyout.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/04-Add-KML.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"04 - Add KML\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/04-Add-KML.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Navigate to where the KMZ file is saved.\u00a0 Select the file and click \u201cOpen\u201d or double-click on the file.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/05-Choose-File.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"05 - Choose File\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/05-Choose-File.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It will load.\u00a0 Remember, each KMZ file is different and can contain multiple types of features, so this may take several seconds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/06-In-ArcGIS-Explorer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"06 - In ArcGIS Explorer\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/06-In-ArcGIS-Explorer.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the contents menu (default location is bottom left corner of window) right-click on the KMZ entry and select \u201cShare\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/07-Contents.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"07 - Contents\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/07-Contents.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Sharing Menu select \u201cLayer Package\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/08-Sharing-Menu.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"08 - Sharing Menu\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/08-Sharing-Menu.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Select \u201cFile\u201d so that the LPK is saved to your local machine\/network.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/09-Save-Screen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"09 - Save Screen\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/09-Save-Screen.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click \u201cSave\u201d.\u00a0 Now enter something for the description of the package, the more detailed the better (for your own benefit later).\u00a0 Click \u201cOK\u201d and ArcGIS Explorer will begin creating the package.\u00a0 WARNING: This could take a while.<\/p>\n<p>Now you can use the regular \u201cAdd Data\u201d function of ArcMap.\u00a0 Before ArcMap just showed an empty directory, not even recognizing the KMZ file existed.\u00a0 But now the LPK is recognized and\u00a0usable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thetalkinggeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/10-In-ArcMap.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"10 -
